Comprehensive Adolescent Residential Educational Services (CARES) - Girls Group Home


To provide a safe and nurturing environment to meet each resident's individual emotional, educational, medical, physical, and spiritual needs. Emphasis is placed on enhancing resident life choices through independent living skills instruction and assistance in developing healthy problem-solving skills.

The CARES Program
is a residential program which offers structured supervision and supportive guidance for adolescent girls, pregnancy decision-making counseling,
pre-natal and parenting education, and life skills/independent living preparation.

Program components include case management, individual service plans, social skills training, academic support, preparation for adult living, parenting education and support, recreation and cultural activities, accessing community resources and 24-hour awake staff.

ELIGIBILITY: Girls at all stages of adolescent development (ages 12-18) including those who are pregnant and parenting are eligible to participate in the CARES program. Girls who would benefit from a structured residential setting are highly encouraged. Referrals from public agencies and private placements are welcome. Given the minor status of our clients, legal guardians must participate in making the placement.
Individuals who are severely physically or emotionally limited, or those who are extremely aggressive may be denied admission.

CARES Goals include:

  1. To meet the immediate needs of each youth in crisis or transition, involving her family whenever possible.
  2. To provide a positive living/learning environment with compassionate, caring staff trained in a variety of teaching methods.
  3. To encourage problem-solving/decision-making and other coping skills.
  4. To utilize community resources to meet the needs of each individual youth.
  5. To provide protection of youth in crisis.To act as an advocate for the youth in the community.


CARES offers the following components:

Each resident shares a room and half-bath with another resident or with her child, if she is parenting. Each resident will be provided with one set of bed linens and one set of towels. All residents are provided with a single bed (or crib) and closet equipped with privacy locks.

Residents are provided three meals a day and two snacks. Residents are also taught basic meal preparation skills. It is expected that all residents who are present will eat in a "family style" setting.

Transportation will be provided by CARES staff to school within a 5 mile distance, medical appointments, court, and family visitation when required within a 25 mile radius.

Upon admission, each resident will meet with an assigned primary worker to establish specific goals and privileges which will become her individualized stay plan. This plan will be monitored within the program, and the plans of group home residents will be reviewed monthly with caseworkers, parents and other interested parties.

The CARES Program provides on-site family visits. These visits can be supervised at a level deemed appropriate by the legal guardian not to include the full responsibilities of a visitation worker.

Each resident will be required to be in school working toward a high school diploma or participate in an alternative educational/vocational plan.

Each resident will be expected to participate in scheduled and recreational groups. Presenters from various community agencies will be utilized periodically. Topics will cover a broad range including parenting, alcohol and drug awareness, community resources, job skills assessment, budgeting, nutrition, sexuality, domestic violence, and self-esteem.

The motivation system is based primarily on positive reinforcement through the use of a daily balance sheet and natural or negotiated consequences. Residents achieve higher levels of fulfilling program requirements and demonstrating appropriate problem-solving ability. Additional privileges are dependent upon age and increased ability to complete responsibilities without continual prompting or monitoring. The motivation system is designed to be a framework in which to monitor behavior and actively teach appropriate behaviors.
