Donors can still give to The Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights Campaign and lighten their tax bill at the same time. “Year-end donations give twice,” said Linda Garbina, Divisional Director of Planned Giving. “By supporting the Tree of Lights Campaign, donors can receive a charitable tax deduction while immediately helping needy families here in the metro.”
The Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights Campaign is still in need of donations. Currently, the campaign has raised 55% of the $3 million goal. Gifts to the Tree of Lights Campaign sustain more than 20 programs that offer meals, shelter, counseling, education, disaster and mental health services. Last year alone, more than 170,000 people were assisted by The Salvation Army.
Gifts of Cash: Gifts by check can be dropped off or mailed to The Salvation Army, Tree of Lights Campaign, 10755 Burt St., Omaha, NE 68114.
Gifts of Stock: By gifting long-held, appreciated stock, donors can receive a charitable tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock gift and save capital gains taxes, too. In order to preserve these tax advantages, it is important that donors make their gift by transferring the shares to The Salvation Army. This is an easy process:
1. Call the broker with the name of the stock and number of shares you wish to gift.
2. The broker can notify The Salvation Army of the transfer at any one of the following numbers:
402-898-5913 – Divisional Director, Linda Garbina
402-898-5912 – The Planned Giving Department, or
1-800-274-0628 – toll free number, if calling from outside Omaha, Nebraska
Instructions for transferring gifts of stock are also available at www.SalArmyGiving.org. As always, donors should consult their tax advisor prior to making any gift.
Donors are encouraged to visit The Salvation Army’s Planned Giving website for additional gifting options at www.SalArmyGiving.org, or call 402-898-5913.
